I took the opportunity of Tricia Keightley’s duo exhibition Tactical Grace with Chris Beeston at Fisher Parrish to follow up with the artist about a few of the objects she keeps at the studio as inspiration for her paintings. In a cool-toned yet vibrant palette, the clean lines of Keightley’s paintings delineate machinations that appear to be of metal—and animate on the canvas with their own brand of humor.

Keightley describes her aptly titled book Mechanical Abstraction which accompanies the exhibition as a “folded-up sculpture” with its 1/16th-inch thick pages. (The limited-edition book is available at the gallery for $35.)

Keightley describes her connection to each of her objects below:

KIDNEY MODEL (at top right)
“A nephrologist gave me this kidney model. I had kidney problems for years ending at age 30. I paid so many bills to doctors while painting on the side. This is in my studio as a reminder that a change in health (good or bad) can change your life.”

BIONICLES (at lower right)
“These are Bionicles, a now-discontinued line of Lego. I have had them for years as inspiration for the industrial forms I love. I improvise all of my work as I make it. It’s great to add some forms together when you’ve hit a dead end in a painting. Occasionally, I will look at these pieces and it can help spark ideas. I never copy them literally or know any of the printed comics involved. Bionicles serve as a nudge towards new combinations for forms.”

HEART MODEL (below left, top image)
“The same nephrologist mentioned previously gave me a heart model. These used to be hard to find but now you can buy online. Can you imagine what the heart model factory must look like?”

WIKING TURBOSCHWADER (below left, bottom image)
“This is a tiny toy model (about 2 inches high and 1:87 scale) of some kind of a grain-thresher tractor attachment from Wiking, a German toy model company. Wiking makes minuscule and highlydetailed models of all types of vehicles. The farming implements series are like microsculptures.
To me, they are abstract in their function but so well-crafted and complex. I always am searching for mechanical forms that are hard to identify but may play a big role in our everyday life.”
